WORD TO MOTHER"TIL THE HOT RUNS COLD"
24.05.08 - 15.06.08
‘Til The Hot Runs Cold…’ opening on the 23rd May will showcase new
works by the artist Word To Mother. This much anticipated solo show,
his second at StolenSpace, will feature paintings in mixed media on
wood, canvas, found objects and installation pieces.
Word to Mother's craft is unlike any others, blending an organic warmth with his compulsive sketch book drawing and city life observations, absorbing the everyday; architecture, social situations, drinking tea and the deliberation of retaining artistic integrity whilst being commercially successful. His canvases are found wood sourced from the beaches of his birth place Hastings or the discarded wealth of weathered objects found of the streets of East London where he now lives and works. These recent paintings feature pattern work interspersed with diamonds, hearts and characters deliberating daily life in an unforgiving city environment.
“I like to use things that have already existed as something else. I like the idea of objects having a past and then re-using them. Taking things that have been discarded by someone, seen as useless and then taking it home and turning it into a painting. For me, a lot of the wood and metal panels I find are beautiful without anything on them, so I try to retain as much of the original texture and colour of the object as possible".
Word to Mother started writing graffiti in 1995 and went on to study a degree in illustration. His work appears in the street as and when he feels the need or finds the right opportunity, his recent works are not as easily executed illegally as I he likes to paint directly onto walls, which take considerable time. As a reaction to that he has always 'tagged' because it’s quick, simple and effective,
“I like the fact that it's a contrast to my paintings, it has an aesthetic that doesn't appeal to the masses, but is something that has always been a part of my life and that's what my paintings in or out of a gallery are about; continuing to do what you love, forever. Not because it’s a trend but because it's a part of who you are…”
