Sandra Chevrier is a Canadian artist who paints hyper-realistic portraits of women under layers of fragmented comic books that act as masks. Often expressing an underlying tragedy of female oppression, Chevrier creates a visual tension between vulnerability and strength, concealment and revelation.

Her celebrated "Cages" series explores the impossible standards and constraints imposed on women by society, asking them to be nothing short of superheroines while denying them their full humanity.

Describing herself as a "gaze collector," Chevrier's work begins with the eyes—windows into the emotional depth and complexity of her subjects. She trained in Visual and Media Arts at the Université du Québec à Montréal, though remains largely self-taught, falling in love with art as a child. Initially gluing torn comic book pages directly onto her canvases, she now paints these graphic elements with meticulous realism, building up loose, heavy textures that make her subjects appear to emerge from a surreal world between reality and imagination.

First exhibiting Sandra Chevrier's work in 2018 with her exhibition ‘Les Cages; We Can’t Be Tamed’ StolenSpace is excited to be welcoming her back in 2026 for her latest body of work.
