This sculpture was made after my phone had been attempted being stolen out of my hands while standing outside my studio in Whitechapel. The feeling that hit me in my stomach was one of the worst I had felt for years and I realised how indebted I was to my phone. The totem is described on wikipedia as “a spirit being, sacred object, or symbol that serves as an emblem of a group of people.” Visitors are invited to bring their broken phones and donate them to the tower, growing higher and higher we all are responsible for those old phones laying around in our drawers, houses or landfills. Circling around the totem also feels like a nod to previous societal and mythological rituals such as maypole dancing and folklore totems.
